Sustainability Initiatives at Kite Group: A Commitment to a Greener Future

Updated: Aug 5

Sustainability initiatives have become imperative for businesses across all industries. At Kite Group, our path to a more sustainable future is not just about meeting regulatory requirements; it's about creating a positive impact on the environment and future generations. Our dedication to sustainability is evident not only in the products we provide but also in our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

This commitment has been recognised through the achievement of another year of Planet Mark accreditation. This is an important milestone on our journey to becoming carbon neutral.

Sustainability as a Culture

Kite Group’s dedication to sustainability is built on a foundation of responsible practices. These practices focus on reducing environmental impact while delivering high-quality solutions to our customers. As a company that designs and manufactures permanent access and safety systems, we are uniquely positioned to influence sustainability in a traditionally energy-intensive sector.

For example, our GRP products use up to 75% less energy to produce than steel. They are long-lasting alternatives that require less maintenance. By integrating sustainable practices into the design, production, and delivery of our products, Kite leads by example. We demonstrate that businesses in the construction and manufacturing sectors can be successful and sustainable.

Managing Sustainability Through Product Design

Sustainability in design starts with the products we choose. There are many factors to consider when determining what makes a product ‘green’. Emissions produced and energy expended during creation, transport, and installation of safety systems should all be accounted for. We must also consider the longevity and energy required for maintaining safety systems. Here are a few of our products with particularly green credentials:

GRP Products

Our entire GRP range—from flooring to handrails, access ladders to step-over platforms—showcase the benefits of this remarkable material. It is energy-efficient to produce, lightweight for transport, durable, and boasts superior corrosion resistance when compared to steel. For a long-term and sustainable solution, consider GRP for your safety system.

The Modifix System

Modifix is our pioneering handrail system that uses laser cutting to minimize the amount of steel needed in a standard industrial handrail. This approach significantly reduces the need for welding, lowering harmful emissions that would otherwise pollute air, land, and water.

Modular Systems

Most of our products are fully modular and tailored to our customers' requirements. This approach reduces potential waste in projects. Component parts can be scaled up or down, reused, or returned if not needed. Modular systems are a cost-effective and sustainable approach to project design.

Another Year of Planet Mark Accreditation

For the third consecutive year, Kite Group has successfully recorded our carbon emissions and contributed to our broader environmental goals. Planet Mark is a certification program that helps businesses become more sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and operating more efficiently.

Last year, the entire staff participated in a Sustainability energizer workshop. This workshop enabled us to brainstorm ideas to cut our emissions and become a greener company. Both this workshop and our accreditation reflect our dedication to accountability and transparency, as well as our commitment to fostering long-term environmental and societal benefits.

The Journey to Carbon Neutral

Kite Group’s commitment to sustainability does not end with obtaining Planet Mark accreditation. It is just one step in our broader plan to become carbon neutral. This ambitious goal involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions in every aspect of our operations—from the materials we use and the energy we consume to the products we deliver and the way we engage with suppliers and customers.

This ongoing process is captured in our Corporate Social Responsibility policy, which is updated every year. This policy has also helped us win Constructionline Gold accreditation.

Leading the Way in Sustainability

Kite Group’s commitment to sustainability serves as a positive example for others in the industry. By prioritizing environmental responsibility, we illustrate that sustainability and profitability can coexist. Our journey to carbon neutrality is not solely about improving our own operations. It is also about inspiring others to follow suit. Every company, regardless of its size or industry, has a role to play in protecting our planet.

Looking to the Future

Kite Group’s ongoing accreditation by Planet Mark reflects our company’s forward-thinking approach to business and sustainability. Our efforts to become carbon neutral show that sustainability is not just a trend but a core value that guides our operations. By continuing to reduce our environmental impact, we are not only shaping the industry's future but also leading the charge toward a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
