Bespoke Ball Standard Handrail
Terrence Higgins Bridge to 2030 Garden
Kite Group supplied a bespoke weathered ball-standard handrail system for the award-winning Bridge to 2030 Garden, blending structural safety with aesthetic design.
Project Overview
Kite Group was proud to support the Terrence Higgins Trust “Bridge to 2030 Garden”, an award-winning outdoor installation that blends creative design with meaningful symbolism.
The garden entrance featured a striking monolith slate stepping stone, representing a bridge to a future with no new HIV cases. Sustainability was at the heart of the project, with reclaimed timber, recycled metals, permeable surfaces, and steel gabions used throughout to minimise environmental impact.
The project was recognised at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, receiving both a Silver Gilt medal and the award for Best Construction.
Did You Know?
Show Gardens at Chelsea are constructed in just 19 days and dismantled in five, with more than 2,000 tonnes of earth moved each year to prepare the site.
Kite’s Contribution
Kite Group supplied a bespoke ball-standard handrail system, customised to achieve a weathered, rustic aesthetic that complemented the wooden walkways and natural planting.
Custom Finish: Instead of a standard finish, the system was manufactured from self-coloured steel, deliberately left to rust to deliver the desired look.
Design Integration: The handrail became a visual feature in its own right, blending seamlessly into the garden’s reclaimed and recycled materials.
Tight Timeframe: Despite a challenging schedule, Kite delivered on time, ensuring the handrail was installed and finished to meet the show’s exacting standards.
This project demonstrated how functional safety systems can also be designed as architectural features, enhancing both aesthetics and performance in landscape design.
