Edinburgh Tram Handrail Project

Kite Group installed galvanised handrail systems across tram stops in Edinburgh, improving passenger safety, staff access, and overall operational compliance.

Project Overview

The Edinburgh Tram system officially opened in May 2014, running a 14km line from York Place to Edinburgh Airport with 15 stops. Today, it forms a key part of the city’s transport infrastructure, with services running every seven minutes and major works underway to extend the line to Newhaven.

Safety and accessibility have been central to the project’s development, with multiple upgrades to platforms, ramps, and access routes since the tram’s launch.

Did You Know?

Edinburgh’s tram heritage dates back to 1871, when the first horse-drawn trams began operating between Edinburgh and Leith. By 1905, the network had switched to electric double-decker trams painted in the distinctive dark red and white colours still seen today on Lothian buses and trams.

Kite Group supplied and installed galvanised handrail systems at a number of tram stops across Edinburgh.

Passenger Safety: Handrails were fitted on steps, ramps, and sloped walkways to make platforms safer and more accessible.
