Port of Leith

The Port of Leith was tasked with improving safety conditions. As Scotland’s largest enclosed deep-water port, it is extremely busy with traffic and pedestrians that face significant risks. Kite were able to offer a safety package that addressed the main complex requirements of the job.

Problems	Solutions
Proximity to water creates significant hazard of drowning.	Ball standard handrail system installed to protect pedestrian visitors and workers from harbour sides. Ball standard systems offer strong fall resistance as they are designed to withstand significant force.
Bustling port with high volume of traffic of different kinds, including vehicles, ships, dock workers and pedestrian visitors.	Crash barrier installed to protect and deflect vehicles from sides of the harbour and handrails installed.
Exposure to sea spray creates both a slip hazard and the conditions for corrosion over time.	Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) walkway system installed, gritted floor provides enhanced anti-slip properties. GRP walkways provide superior corrosion resistance than steel counterparts.

MOD Test & Maintenance Depot

This customer had incredibly complex requirements. A platform was required to provide access to special machinery for testing and maintenance – highly specific in size, with safety and durability in mind. A full GRP platform was provided, the system encompassing GRP handrails, GRP open mesh panels flooring, GRP kickplates and GRP stair nosing.

Problems	Solutions
Platform was to be located in an area with high exposure to moisture.	GRP grating panels provide secure, anti-slip walkways while GRP material does not corrode with rust like steel.
Platform risked exposure to chemicals.	GRP material highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, unlike other materials.
Platform risked exposure to electricity.	GRP material non-conductive, unlike steel and other metals.
Platform was to be highly visible, as night time work may have been required.	High-visible yellow colour used for GRP handrails, kickplates and structure supports, one of the most visible options. GRP stair nosing provided in white to contrast against grey steps.
Platform must be lighter in weight than steel.	GRP up to 75% lighter than steel counterparts.

MOD Test & Maintenance Depot

This commercial building project has won several awards for its green credentials, and has been described as a ‘technical and logistical masterpiece’. Kite Group provided custom 3 ball galvanised handrails in a complete system with mesh panels installed for added safety.

Location above one of UK’s busiest train stations with high pressure to install quickly.	Galvanised ball standards system is modular and easy to install at pace.
Handrails installed over 10 storeys, extremely hazardous for workers.	Custom 3 ball standard handrail fabricated to add extra safety, taller handrail solution included mesh panels to provide comprehensive fall protection.
High volume of handrailing required to cover this area.	Modular handrails are scalable and therefore a large area can be quickly and easily safeguarded by a singular handrailing system.
Installers remit to "add value to, and take risk out of, an extremely challenging project.”	Kite’s comprehensive fall protection system took risk out of the work on this building over three years of work.
