Farnworth Leisure Centre

LOCATION

Farnworth,Bolton, UK

INDUSTRY

Leisure & Recreation

PROJECT DETAILS

Farnworth is located approximately 2 miles southeast of Bolton and 8 miles northwest of Manchester.

As part of an energy efficiency upgrade, Farnworth Leisure Centre received funding to install new solar panels. These panels will enable the centre to generate some of its own electricity, thereby reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy. This initiative is part of Bolton Council’s broader efforts to tackle climate change and achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

DID YOU KNOW?

Farnworth is currently undergoing a significant transformation as part of a £50 million redevelopment project? This ambitious plan aims to revitalise the former market precinct into a vibrant new town centre community. The project includes the construction of 85 apartments, 12 family homes, new coffee shops, eateries, stores, and green spaces.

KITE'S PART OF THE PROJECT

With the installation of solar systems and other equipment on facility roofs, the frequency of visits and access will increase. To comply with UK safety on roofs and prevent potential fall accidents for technicians and solar panel engineers, the facility management, in collaboration with Bolton Council, decided to implement comprehensive safety measures for working at height. Our Freestanding Roof Edge Protection system was selected to provide a necessary safeguard for the facility roofs. This system was an excellent choice for the following reasons:

  • Fall Prevention: Acts as a barrier, preventing accidental falls from rooftops or elevated surfaces.

  • Stability: Uses recycled plastic weights and galvanised posts to create a stable base, ensuring the system remains firmly in place.

  • Compliance with Standards: Adheres to various safety standards, including BS 13700, BS EN 13374, and BS EN ISO 14122-3, ensuring guaranteed safety and quality.

  • Wind Load Resistance: Designed to withstand wind loads according to BS 6399: Part 2: 1995, keeping the system secure even during adverse weather conditions.

  • Ease of Installation: Modular and self-supporting, the system can be installed without penetrating the roof surface, maintaining the integrity of the roof and solar panel installation.

  • Environmental Benefits: Counterweights made from recycled plastic reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainability.

  • Durability: Galvanised components provide long-lasting protection.

By implementing this system, the Farnworth Leisure Centre not only improved safety but also contributed to the overall sustainability and success of the energy efficiency initiative.
