Eastfield Railway Project
Kite Group supplied GRP handrails, mesh infills, and walkways at Eastfield Railway Depot in Glasgow, enhancing safety across tracks, elevated platforms, and service routes.
Project Overview
The Eastfield Railway Depot in northern Glasgow has been a key site in Scotland’s rail history since it first opened in 1904. Originally built by the North British Railway, it serviced steam locomotives before evolving to handle diesel engines and, eventually, modern electric trains.
After closing in the 1990s, the depot was reopened in 2004 following a £14m investment by the Scottish Executive, which delivered new sheds, track, signalling, and half a mile of elevated cleaning platforms. In 2017–18, the depot was extended again as part of the Edinburgh–Glasgow Improvement Programme, supporting the city’s busiest commuter line.
Today, Eastfield serves as a vital refuelling, cleaning, and maintenance hub for ScotRail services linking Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh.
Did You Know?
Eastfield once housed a wheel lathe and two snowploughs. While the depot’s logo was often thought to feature a Scottie dog, it was actually based on a West Highland White Terrier (“Westie”).
Kite’s Contribution
Kite Group supported the depot’s refurbishment by supplying a full range of GRP safety systems:
Walkway Protection: GRP handrails and mesh infills installed along all walkways between tracks, safeguarding technicians, engineers, and visitors.
Edge Safety: GRP handrail systems fitted along side edges to protect against falling objects from nearby slopes.
Durable Design: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant GRP provided a long-lasting solution suitable for a busy rail maintenance environment.
Through these installations, Kite helped ensure compliance, accessibility, and higher safety standards at one of Scotland’s most important railway depots.
