Forth Ports Leith Project
Kite Group supplied handrails, mesh flooring, GRP walkways, and crash barriers at the Port of Leith, Scotland’s busiest maritime hub, significantly improving site safety.
Project Overview
The Port of Leith is Scotland’s largest enclosed deep-water port, capable of handling vessels up to 50,000 deadweight tonnes. Situated just three miles from Edinburgh city centre, it is a key hub for North Sea shipping with direct access to road and rail connections.
Dating back to the 14th century, Leith has a long history as one of Scotland’s busiest maritime trading ports. Today, it continues to play a vital role in logistics and shipping, with a strong focus on safety improvements for both staff and visitors. To address risks around traffic management, near-water access, and site operations, the port invested in new handrails, crash barriers, and anti-slip flooring systems.
Did You Know?
In the 18th century, Leith Harbour was so crowded with vessels that locals joked you could cross from one side to the other by walking over the ship decks without getting your feet wet.
Kite’s Contribution
Kite Group enhanced safety and accessibility across the Port of Leith by supplying and installing:
Galvanised Two-Ball Standard Handrails: Providing secure support along pathways and access points.
GRP Walkways & Open Mesh Flooring: Delivering durable, anti-slip surfaces for high-traffic and near-water areas.
Crash Barrier Systems: Installed to protect critical units and structures from vehicle impact.
Together, these systems created a robust and reliable safety package, supporting the port’s operational efficiency while safeguarding its workforce and visitors.
